It is with deep sorrow and profound love that we announce the passing of my beloved grandmother, Rebbitzen Mattel (Matilda) Zaks, at the age of 88. She was more than just my grandmother—she was my second mother, my guide, and my heart. From my earliest memories until the day I married, I shared the same home with her, and the bond we had was truly unbreakable.
I was lucky to be standing next to her when she took her last breath on this world on August 26th.
Her life was one of incredible strength and resilience. Losing her father before the age of five, she then endured the unimaginable loss of her mother and brother during the horrors of the Holocaust when she was just seven. Yet, despite being left an orphan in a world shattered by war, she never gave up. Her faith, her unwavering emunah in Hashem, was the foundation that held her up when most would have crumbled. She believed deeply that everything happens for a reason, that there is a master plan, and she never allowed herself to be defeated by life's challenges.
After the tragic loss of her husband nearly 30 years ago, she could have chosen to retreat into grief, but that wasn’t her way. Instead, she fought for purpose, for meaning, and for the people she loved. She was a pillar of strength, continuing to live each day with dignity, courage, and boundless love.
Bubby had an incredible gift for connecting with people. Whether you were young or old, she had a way of making you feel understood, valued, and loved. She was warm, down-to-earth, and had the rare ability to see people for who they were, meeting them at their level with kindness and grace.
When I opened my store, despite the physical struggle of climbing the steps, Bubby made it her mission to visit. She always supported me, physically and emotionally, no matter how difficult it was for her. Her presence was a constant reminder of the importance of family, perseverance, and love.
Bubby was the quintessential grandmother, the one we all dream of having, and I was blessed to have her in my life. Her love, her wisdom, and her strength will live on in me and in our family. I miss you deeply, Bubby. You are a part of me forever, and your legacy will continue through all of us who were lucky enough to be touched by your light.
May your soul have the highest aliyah, and may you rest in eternal peace.
Sincerely,
Your granddaughter, Chaja F. Rabinowitz (Brukirer)
